literally coughing his head off

Stacey Tappan writes:
My father is a pediatrician, and while he was listening to his on-call messages one day he was amused to hear the following:
“I am not exaggerating. My child is literally coughing his head off.”
I think she showed an admirable amount of restraint not taking the poor kid to the emergency room. It must take nerves of steel to leave such a precise and factual message for your pediatrician when your child’s head is falling off.

Wow! I love your site. Misuse of the word “literally” bugs me, and it’s delightful to see someone taking the piss out of the people who use it so liberally. Meaning, taking their ego down a notch in a mocking and humorous fashion. Literally.
