literally seen them before

Sydney Confidential
Sydney party girl Bessie Bardot has every reason to describe an e-mail of photos of herself in a bisexual orgy as “malicious assault” on her privacy, but she might take heart in knowing Sydney has seen the photos all before - literally.

The pictures, which have been doing the rounds for at least three years, came as no surprise to Confidential’s lads magazine sources yesterday who said they’d been offered the photos time and time again.

I’m filing this one under ‘unnecessary’ - simply because I don’t even understand what it’s supposed to mean in this context. As far as I can tell, it’s just extraneous.

Perhaps this is what they meant:

The phrase “I’ve seen it all before” means that I’ve seen similar things in the past, and seeing another is not going to offer anything new to my experience. For example, if a friend said “Bill Clinton is having an affair!” I might reply “Yeah, I’ve seen it all before.”

So, with these Bardot photos, they’re saying that the citizens of Sydney have seen such behavior before, and they have literally seen the exact photos before.

While it might be a correct use of literally, it’s not a very good one, and certainly it’s unnecessary.
